What would be the purpose of nailing down the lid of a coffin?

Seriously...

Inspired by a Squirrel Family Funeral I attended. What would be the purpose of nailing down the lid of a coffin?
Stops anyone raiding the nutsacksWhat would be the purpose of nailing down the lid of a coffin?
I would think that nailing down the lid keeps the body from falling out if the pallbearers drop the coffin!

That actually happens...a friend of mine saw it happen at a relative's funeral. The deceased was a heavy man and when one of the pallbearers stumbled over that silly astroturf they spread all over during a funeral, the weight shifted and the dead man tumbled out of the coffin. The widow screamed, everyone else was crying, it was a mess...a few nails would have prevented it!
I have asked a similar question, which I think I finally figured out the answer to.

I want to know why there are fences around cemeteries. Nobody's gonna leave, ya know.

Then I finally realized that people are just DYING to get in! (ROFLOL hah hah hah {*GRIN*} )
To keep the thing from opening up and the body falling out.

Go to YouTube and watch Penn %26amp; Teller's show ';Bullsh*t!'; for the episode on death -- under the weight of all that dirt, coffins fall apart in pretty short order.
Its suppost to stop things from getting in........grave robbers, the secret girlfriend on the side sobbing and wanting to end it all and be with her lover eternally. It delays the worms from getting in.
It keeps the Zombies locked in as well as you wouldn't want the lid to pop off the coffin if you dropped it exposing the dead body.
So as when the coffin is in transit there will no chance the body could end up tumbling out due to an accident or otherwise.
To make sure that if the zombie virus is released by the government, all dead bodies remain below ground.
The only practical reason I can think of, is to deter Necrophiliacs.
It keeps the necrophiliacs out.
To stop Polish imigrants from setting up a hotel inside.
So that the body doesn't fly out if you hit a bump on the way to the cemetery.
Well what would be the purpose of putting someone or something in a coffin
Vampires.
To keep the lid from moving while the dirt is placed into the grave. I suspect they have a good sealant on human caskets.
Zombies
That would be an ecumenical matter
They probably have some spare nails hanging around...
To keep out grave robbers I would imagine.
to make sure that squirrel stays good and dead.
So that when the dirt shifts, it won't nudge the top off.
Don't be silly. It's to stop them getting out.
I guess so they can't get out lol! J/K
Water!

When it floods, you don't want the bodies going out of their coffins.
lol..okay so no one steals the body!
I don't know, is there a point?
