Why is it considered necessary to nail down the lid of a coffin?

Serious answer: So that the body don't fall out or anything?

Fun answer: So that when the person becomes a zombie they have a harder time getting out, if they can get out at all.Why is it considered necessary to nail down the lid of a coffin?
It may be because there are grave robbers who might be deterred or slowed down by a coffin that's been nailed shut. It may also be to keep the decomposing remains and the gases that form from it from escaping and stinking like crazy. I suppose in some areas it would be to keep a vampire in the grave. Why is it considered necessary to nail down the lid of a coffin?
So the body doesn't tumble out in front of the grieving relatives if the pall bearers drop it (happened more frequently than you'd think). Probably mostly a tradition now, but even a strong gust of wind could have blown the lid off a wooden coffin in centuries past!
to keep the zombies in during the zombie uprising. dur

AHH THEY';RE COMING!!!! *argh, zomb zomb*

but for real, it's to keep the lid on and the dead persons juices from leaching into the soil. the preservatives they use on dead people are really bad for the earth.
Keep the body in private and to keep the lid on..
Now they use velcro
