It was because of the belief in witchcraft. They believed that if the person were a witch trying to cheat death that they would feel the pierce of the nails through their hands and feet if they tried to escape their death before Lucifer had come to claim them.Why is it considered necessary to nail down the lid of a coffin?
It's probably to inconvenience the ';creepier'; demographic of the grave-robbing profession.





If a zombie or vampire were to try to get out, he or she would probably look back at his investment in nail manufacturers as a shortsighted project.
