Why is a coffin nailed down?

why do they nail them down? do they the dead body is gunna jump up or so that people dont dig up the body and rape it?Why is a coffin nailed down?
To prevent the zombies from coming out and eating brains.Why is a coffin nailed down?
If someone goes to the trouble of digging up a body to rape it, do you think nails are going to stop them? No they don't use nails.
Well, the second option is more on the level, but we're not not talking necrophiliac rape usually. We're talking, treasure hunters, maggots, coyotes, that sort of thing. But mostly we're talking about sentimentality, 'cause otherwise we'd keep the treasures, and let the coyotes and maggots have at.
If it's a wooden one, to keep the lid on. If it isn't a wooden one, it isn't nailed down.
its like why is there a fence around a grave yard????

A: people are just dying to get in!
Graverobbers.

They aren't nailed down. They close either by 2 small clasp mechanisms or by a rubber seal method, where the lid and base meet and are sealed with a casket ';key';, which cranks the lid as close as possible to the base.

For the answers that said it is to prevent graverobbers? That is incorrect. Graverobbing has not occurred for a very long time, not to mention that the casket is encased in a concrete vault prior to burial, which literally weighs a ton and could never, ever be moved without a backhoe. Graverobbing is not an issue, hasn't been for about 100 years.
Zombies.
So that we can maintain cute little anecdotal sayings, such as ';that ciggarette will put another nail in your coffin.';

Where would we be without it??
